OpenInsight for U2 FAQ
As an OpenInsight developer do I
have to use the IBM U2 database?
No. The use of a U2 database is
provided in addition to our standard
linear hash database.
Why would Revelation enter into
this partnership?
U2 developers and users have a need
to enhance their legacy applications
using OpenInsight while preserving
their existing database and business
logic.
For existing OpenInsight developers
and users, the U2 databases have a
number of features that OpenInsight
does not currently have. Also, there
are some cases that when making a
sale that it will be easier to
answer the question ‘what database
does it use’ with the answer ‘an IBM
database’.
Is the pricing different if I use
a U2 database?
Yes. The U2 databases require the
purchase of U2 licenses which also
have annual maintenance fees.
OpenInsight for U2 will be offered
at special pricing.
When is this change available?
Users can already use OI as a front
end to the U2 databases. Contact
Revelation Software for pricing
information.
Do I still need to purchase a
Universal Driver?
OpenInsight for U2 will include a
Universal Driver bundled with every
purchase.
If I use the U2 database, will I
need to make any changes to my
system?
No. OpenInsight’s U2 connector is so
seamless that once the connection is
made, OpenInsight sees and treats
the U2 data as if it were native
OpenInsight tables. Reports, Forms,
Windows, and Programs will all work
the same way, without any need for
changes or recompilation.
If I have tech support questions,
will I have to call IBM?
No, first line of support will be
Revelation Software. Revelation
personnel have been trained in the
U2 databases and should be able to
answer most of your questions. If
not, your call will be forwarded to
IBM.
U2 databases can run on more
platforms that OpenInsight. Does it
now mean that OpenInsight can run on
more platforms?
On the back end, yes. If OpenInsight
is running on a Windows or Linux
desktop, and can communicate to the
U2 database via TCP/IP, then there
should be no problem. However we
have not tested every possible back
end, so your mileage may vary.
Where can I find out more
information about the U2 databases?
IBM has a very informational website
regarding the U2 family. A good
starting point is:
